Retail · Pet
Half a pet store is a shop and half of it is a service business
Food, tanks and toys on one side; grooming, training and boarding on the other; and a live-goods department where the inventory eats, breathes and does not survive a shelf count. Most pet retailers run two systems for that and reconcile them by hand every night.
What actually changes at the counter
Four things a pet retailer deals with every day that a general-purpose terminal was never asked about.
One ticket, service and retail
The service line carries the groomer for the split; the retail lines carry stock movement. Both close on one tender. Split them across two systems and you lose the one number a pet store most wants: what a grooming visit is actually worth once the customer walks past the food aisle.
Recurring food that can be paused
Auto-ship is the most durable revenue in the vertical and the easiest to lose. A failed run raises a task instead of quietly stopping, and a customer who is going away for a month can pause rather than cancel. The difference between those two words is most of your retention.
Live goods and perishables
A tank of fish, a rack of crickets and a bag of frozen feed do not behave like boxed goods. Loss is normal, expected and worth recording, because a department whose shrink is never written down is a department nobody can price.
Prescription diets on record
Veterinary-authorised diets and controlled items need an authorisation that belongs to the store rather than to whoever happens to be on the till. Recorded against the customer and the animal, the check survives a new hire's first Saturday.
Buying guide: what to ask before you sign anything
Written for a pet retailer comparing three proposals, including ours. Ask every one of them these questions.
- Ring a groom and two retail items on one ticket. Then show me the groomer's attribution and the stock movement from the same sale. If it takes two tickets, you will be reconciling by hand every night you own it.
- Show me a failed recurring charge.Ask what the customer sees, what your staff sees, and whether the schedule keeps going. Silent failure on auto-ship is a slow leak nobody notices for a quarter.
- How is livestock loss recorded?Ask specifically. Most retail systems have no answer, and the workaround is a manual adjustment nobody codes a reason to, which makes the department unmeasurable.
- Can a customer record hold more than one animal?Grooming notes, diet authorisations and vaccination records belong to the pet, not to the person paying. Ask to see that modelled, not improvised in a comment field.
- Can you export the recurring book?Who is on auto-ship, on what schedule, with what next date. Ask for it on demand, in a format you can open, without a support ticket.
- Is the hardware yours, and is it locked to one processor? The answer decides whether your next decision is a negotiation or a rip-out. Ask before you sign.
Questions pet retailers actually ask
Can a groom and a retail purchase go on one ticket?
Yes, and they should. The service line and the retail lines share a ticket so the customer taps once, the groomer's work is attributed for the split, and the retail attach on a grooming visit becomes something you can actually measure.
How does recurring food delivery work?
The customer agrees once to a stored card and a schedule. Each run charges on its own date against that agreement, a failure raises a task rather than disappearing, and the customer can pause it without cancelling — which is the difference between a hold and a lost account.
What about prescription diets and controlled items?
The authorisation is recorded against the customer and the pet, so a repeat purchase checks against a record instead of against whoever is on the till. The check belongs to the store, not to the shift.
We run retail and grooming on separate books. Does that have to change?
No. Grooming appointments and the shop counter can stay separate where that is how the place thinks, and still settle into one deposit. Telling a wash apart from a bag of food is a reporting question.
Tell us about your store
Name and one way to reach you is enough. A person reads this, not a scoring model.
Thank you — that reached us.
We will be in touch. If it is easier, book the call directly: pick a time.
We will implement whatever is right for you — including keeping what you have.
Two free tools, before you talk to anybody
Both are open to anyone, and neither asks for a supplier list.
- Answer the boarding questions Tell it you sell repeat food orders, book grooming appointments and handle livestock on the same counter, and it returns a starting configuration that expects one account across all three.
- Get a free statement audit Send a month with a grooming week in it. Booked services and counter retail sit on different lines, and we will point at each.
