Motel payments for a desk that is open when the bank is not

A motel is not a small hotel. The guest is standing at the window, the stay is one or two nights, the card is physically present, and the decision has to be made in under a minute.

What a walk-in desk actually needs

Short stays, card-present, and an office that is staffed at hours no support line answers.

What to ask before a motel changes processors

The questions a night manager would ask if anybody asked the night manager.

Questions motel operators ask

Plain answers for a desk that has other things to do.

Do we need the same setup as a full-service hotel?

No. Short card-present stays do not need folio and group billing machinery, and paying for it does not make the desk faster.

What happens if the internet drops?

The terminal is configured for offline handling so a payment can be taken and forwarded when the line returns, instead of turning the guest away.

Can we set our own batch close time?

Yes, and it should match your shift change so the terminal day and the worked day are the same day.

How do we charge for damage after a guest leaves?

On the registration record and signed policy, with dated photographs captured before departure and stored with the transaction.

What if a guest pays cash for the room?

The property still needs a way to cover incidentals, and that is written into the policy the guest signs at check-in rather than decided later.

Two free tools, before you talk to anybody

Both are open to anyone, and neither needs an IT person on site to be useful.
